J. Christopher Perry
Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Perry founded the company in 2000 and today provides strategic leadership and guidance, rooted in the owner/operator model. Mr. Perry chairs the senior management and investment committees.
Mr. Perry started the company with the development of a single self-storage facility and today the firm owns and operates in excess of 2,500,000 square feet of commercial real estate including over 6,000 self-storage units. Suburban is focused on the development of retail, office, self-storage and lodging properties from Virginia to Florida. It continues to expand Happy Boxes®, its proprietary self-storage brand, with twelve stores open or in development.
Mr. Perry studied at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His board affiliations have included Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, Norfolk Botanical Garden, Virginia Arts Festival and Eastern Virginia Medical School. He currently serves on the board of trustees for Norfolk Academy and the board of directors for Access College Foundation.
Timothy J. Stiffler
Mr. Stiffler provides strategic leadership for Suburban’s investment platform and growth initiatives. In addition, he has direct oversight of portfolio operations, finance and development. Mr. Stiffler serves on the firm’s senior management and investment committees.
Prior to joining Suburban, Mr. Stiffler was Managing Director for a full service commercial real estate company with regional responsibility for asset management, development and lender consulting services. He also served as President of the company’s lodging division.
Mr. Stiffler previously served as President of a large Virginia based hotel company, overseeing the development and operation of the company’s 28 hotels in Virginia and North Carolina prior to the sale of the company in 2008. The company was a franchisee and strategic development partner for Marriott International and ranked in the Top 50 Hotel Management Companies.
Mr. Stiffler is an honors graduate of the University of Virginia and currently serves on the board of trustees for Norfolk Academy and Westminster Canterbury.
Marcus B. Lewis
Senior Vice President of Construction & Development
Mr. Lewis is responsible for the coordination and oversight of all major construction and renovation projects, including franchise required product improvement plans.
Mr. Lewis has been active in the real estate construction business since 1983. Prior to joining Suburban Capital, he served as Vice President of Development and Construction for a large regional hotel company.
Caroline K. Wood, CPA, CFE
Senior Vice President of Accounting
Ms. Wood leads the company’s accounting team, and has direct responsibility for monthly financial reporting, treasury management and internal audit.
Prior to joining Suburban, Ms. Wood was a senior finance manager at Canon Inc., a Fortune 500 technology company. Previously she was the controller for a regional hotel developer and operator where she led an accounting division that supported more than 30 hotels. Ms. Wood began her accounting career with the regional accounting firm of McPhillips, Roberts and Deans, PLC where she served on the audit team.
Ms. Wood earned her bachelor’s degree in management from Old Dominion University.
Howard M. Woods
Senior Vice President of Operations
Mr. Woods manages all operational aspects of the firm’s self storage and hotel portfolios. His key responsibilities include ensuring compliance with brand standards and maintaining a culture of service excellence.
Mr. Woods has a deep background in hotel management and operations. He has over 15 years of multi-unit management experience including full service, select service and resort lodging properties.
Prior to joining Suburban, Mr. Woods was director of operations for two large regional hotel management companies. He has worked extensively with the industry’s leading brands, including Marriott, Hilton, Starwood, IHG and Choice Hotels.
Senior Vice President of Asset Services
Mr. Starowicz leads the Asset Services Group for the firm which has direct oversight for the company’s commercial real estate portfolio. His key responsibilities include strategies for asset management, property management, leasing and capital expenditures. Mr. Starowicz also serves on the firm’s investment committee which is tasked with oversight responsibilities with respect to acquisitions, dispositions, development projects, financings and other similar investments
Prior to joining Suburban Capital, Mr. Starowicz spent his career working with institutional owners of commercial real estate, most recently as Chief Operating Officer for Allegiancy, a real estate asset management company with $700m of assets under management, where he was responsible for asset management, leasing, marketing and property operations. Prior to Allegiancy, Mr. Starowicz was a Managing Director with Harbor Group International and has held executive positions in asset management and acquisitions, for three publicly traded real estate investment companies.
Mr. Starowicz has a double degree from the State University of New York in Environmental Studies and Landscape Architecture, a Master of Business Administration from University of Dallas and his Juris Doctor from Texas A&M University.
